Cladding & Recladding

Exterior Cladding, Done Right the First Time

Cladding is one of the areas we get called back for most, on new builds and on homes that need their existing cladding replaced. We work with James Hardie products, cedar, LMA and other timber claddings, and we'll run the job as a full supply and install contract or labour only if you've already got materials sorted.

Cladding is Restricted Building Work under the Building Act, which means it has to be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner. Connor is registered (LBP139411), so every cladding job we run, new or reclad, is legally accountable and inspected to the standard the council expects. We work across Christchurch, Selwyn and North Canterbury, and every job is backed by full insurance and a 5 year warranty. If you're partway through a new build, cladding is one of the stages we manage as part of the whole job.

Two Situations, One Standard

New Cladding or Recladding, We Do Both

New Build

If you're partway through a new build, cladding gets fitted once the frame is weathertight, and we'll work to whatever material and look you've chosen as part of the build.

Recladding

If you're recladding an existing home, the job usually starts with removing the old cladding, checking what's underneath for any damage, and making sure the house is weathertight again before the new cladding goes on.

Both are Restricted Building Work, both run under the same LBP oversight, and both can be a full supply and install contract or labour only.

Material Choice

Choosing Your Cladding Material

We're highly skilled across all three, and we'll talk you through what suits your home, your budget and the look you're after rather than pushing one product over another.

James Hardie

Fibre cement weatherboard and panel systems. Low maintenance, consistent finish, a common choice for both new builds and recladds.

Cedar

A natural timber look that ages and weathers over time. Popular on architecturally designed homes and feature sections of a build.

LMA & Other Timber Claddings

Other timber cladding profiles and systems, chosen for a specific look or to match an existing home.

The Process

How a Cladding Job With Mackla Construction Works

01

Get In Touch

Call, text, or send an enquiry for a free cladding quote.

02

Site Assessment

We look at your existing cladding (for a reclad) or your build plans (for new cladding), and talk through material options.

03

Quote & Consent Check

A clear scope and quote, plus confirmation of what consent is needed since cladding is Restricted Building Work.

04

Removal & Weathertightness Check

For recladding jobs, the old cladding comes off and we check what's underneath before anything new goes on.

05

Installation

Cladding fixed, flashed and sealed to the manufacturer's specifications, whether that's James Hardie, cedar, LMA or another timber cladding.

06

Final Inspection & Handover

Signed off to the standard the council expects, and covered by our 5 year warranty from that point.

Signs Your Home Might Need Recladding

Cracked, warped or visibly damaged cladding
Paint that keeps failing in the same spots
Soft or damp patches on interior walls near exterior corners
Musty smells that don't go away

Not every one of these means a full reclad is needed, sometimes it's a repair or a weathertightness fix, but they're worth a proper look rather than ignoring.

Built Right

Restricted Building Work, and Why It Matters Here

Cladding affects the weathertightness of your home, which makes it Restricted Building Work under the Building Act. That means it has to be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner, and a full reclad generally needs building consent. Connor is a registered LBP (LBP139411), so the work is legally accountable and inspected to the standard the council expects, not just a trade doing a favour.

What Affects the Cost of Your Cladding Job

We don't publish set prices for cladding, since a small repair and a full reclad are very different jobs. The main variables are the size of the area being clad, the material you choose (James Hardie, cedar, LMA or another timber cladding), whether it's new cladding on a build or a full reclad with removal of the old material, and whether anything unexpected turns up underneath once old cladding comes off. Supply and install or labour only also changes the number. The only way to get a real figure is a site visit and a proper quote, which is free and comes with no obligation.

How much does recladding or new cladding cost?

It depends on the area being clad, the material you choose, and whether it's new cladding or a full reclad. See "What Affects the Cost of Your Cladding Job" above. We don't publish set prices, a free site visit and quote will give you a real number.

Do you cover Selwyn and North Canterbury, or just Christchurch?

We work across Christchurch, Selwyn and North Canterbury, and further out toward Kaikoura and Timaru for the right job.

Which cladding material should I choose?

Depends on your budget, the look you're after, and your home. See "Choosing Your Cladding Material" above, we'll talk you through James Hardie, cedar and LMA options at the site visit.

How do I know if my home needs recladding?

Cracked or damaged cladding, paint that keeps failing, damp patches inside near exterior walls, and musty smells are all worth getting checked. See "Signs Your Home Might Need Recladding" above.
